Physical Education and Sports Sciences have always been present in ISCE's DNA, having their genesis in the much-missed Degree in Primary Education Teachers VR. Physical Education which, at the time, provided qualifications for teaching in the area in question.
This remained the case until the advent of the Bologna process, which called for a reinvention of the entire teaching-learning process, particularly in the restructuring of initial training study plans.
In this way, the Degree in Physical Education and Sport emerged, already organized in six semesters and aimed at the different sports professions, enabling students to obtain the degree of bachelor at the same time as the degree of coach in one of 7 modalities (Handball, Basketball , Football, Futsal, Volleyball, Athletics and Swimming).
During this period, other specialized training courses emerged, namely the Postgraduate Course in Football Goalkeeping Training, the Advanced Course in Physical Preparation in Football and the Advanced Course in Active Aging and Gerontomotricity, allowing ISCE to train dozens of professionals in the field. branch of sports training and health and exercise.
The Master's Degree in Sports Coaching: specialization in Football and Futsal, has become a pioneering study cycle in Portugal, as it is the first to specifically address the modalities of football and futsal, enabling the award of Grade II football coaching or futsal depending on the chosen specialization.
ISCE has always sought to bring academic reality closer to the professional contexts of sport, aiming to allow students to experience the idiosyncrasies typical of the practice. Thus, strategic partnerships with Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting Clube de Portugal stand out, allowing students to intern within the framework of these two prestigious institutions, in collective and individual modalities.
ISCE, fulfilling its transatlantic mission, also made a strong contribution to the preparation of Angola's National Football Development Plan, through the construction of the guiding document that established the main pillars and action strategies.
In 2020, the Department of Sports Sciences is a strategic partner of the Odivelas City Council in the international event “Odivelas, European City of Sports”.
As a higher education institution, and in compliance with its mission of producing knowledge, the ISCE Department of Sports Sciences has a scientific publication – REDAF – Revista de Desporto e Atividade Física – indexed in Latindex.
In the 2019/2020 academic year, the 1st edition of the Degree in Sports took place, which allows specialization in two distinct areas, namely, Sports Training or Exercise and Health.
The Department of Sports Sciences will continue to consolidate its position in the market, through the training of graduates, qualified to practice different sports professions, as well as through the production of scientific knowledge, originating from different lines of research.
